Green-Wood Cemetery was opened in 1838 as a much-needed alternative to crowded burial plots within Manhattan. By the 1860s it was a popular destination for unusual Yorkers who visited to honor the dead but also to admire features like the Gothic Revival arches and spires of its public entrance and elegant columned mausoleums built in the Greek Revival style. In Rudolph Cronaus shadowy interpretation of the scene, however, these picturesque landmarks are transformed into something eerie and mysterious.
