I refer of course to the suffragettes – a film approximately whom was screened for the first time in London last night. Joining the Hollywood stars were the feminist descendants of the suffragettes: a modern direct action group called Sisters Uncut, which occupied the red carpet in protest at cuts to domestic violence services.
Women lay on the floor chanting Dead women can’t vote!” and were subsequently (wo)manhandled by security, or in an ironic tribute to the sort of treatment the Pankhursts received from the authorities during their protests.
