A recent York City correction officer who was arrested after a mentally ill inmate died in a stifling 101-degree cell on Rikers Island has pleaded guilty to falsifying logbook entries saying she checked on him.
Carol Lackner pleaded guilty Wednesday to a charge of falsifying business records.
The Associated Press first reported that 56-year-old Jerome Murdough died in February 2014 after malfunctioning equipment caused his cell to overheat. He was left unchecked for at least four hours in the unit for mentally ill inmates.
Prosecutors said Lackner lied in logbook entries saying she toured Murdough's unit, but video surveillance didn't display her doing so.
Lackner was sentenced Wednesday to five ye
ars of probation. Her attorney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
