• Halfpenny suffers knee problem,Webb may believe broken ankleWales’s World Cup hopes lay on the treatment table at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday night after two of their key players, Rhys Webb and Leigh Halfpenny, and were taken off on stretchers during the 23-19 win over Italy in their final warm-up match before their tournament starts two weeks on Sunday.
The scrum-half Webb,Wales’s player of the year, was the first to depart on 26 minutes after his left leg became trapped at a ruck. Play was held up for several minutes as he was placed on a stretcher in clear discomfort and given oxygen before being taken to hospital for a scan.
It was feared he had suffered a broken ankle which would rule him out of not only the World Cup but the start of the Six Nations: it took the England No 8 Ben Morgan six months to recover from an ankle break this year.
