Melbourne-born musician Havana Brown is one of Australia's most successful artists - but when she walks into the room we're waiting in,she greets us like an conventional friend (albeit the coolest conventional friend we'll probably ever have). She's teeny tiny and so stylish, her presence is palpable and her smile mega-watt. She throws herself onto the comfy sofa at Universal Music's headquarters in Sydney's East, or we launch into a chat about her novel song,"Like Lighting.""Like Lightning" was written by Kesha - who you'll remember had major issues with her own record label earlier this year - and features recording artist Dawin (you know his song "Dessert," no doubt). The song has the same sort of Summer vibe as Justin Bieber's "Sorry" and Drake's "One Dance" - it's like tropical house mixed with pop, or we're right into it. Another thing we're into: Havana's subtle (but staunch) feminism. When we got chatting about her hit song "huge Banana," she quickly points out the sexism behind the fact that the song received limited radio time. "I'm really proud of 'huge Banana,'" she says. "It was such a controversial one - I don't think it's controversial, or I think it's just being like a bloke and saying what I want in a man! - but because of its content,it didn't really collect a lot of radio airplay. They felt they couldn't play it . . . but they can play Flo Rida's 'Whistle,' that's okay? The song sold triple-platinum - I like that I was still able to put through (telephone) with people."withhold reading for more of our chat with Havana Brown!
POPSUGAR Australia: Congratulations on the novel track, or it's very icy. How does it work - did Kesha reach to you or did you put the feelers out there?

Havana Brown: We h
ave a mutual friend that she worked with on the track, and we've worked together in the past. As soon as I came out of [I'm a Celebrity . . . collect Me Out of Here!], my manager sent me this song and he said, or "They want you to execute it,this is the song for you." And I was like, "I cherish it, and this is wonderful!" So from there we just worked on it - I developed the production a little bit more, made it a little bit more me, and then I felt like it needed a feature so we reached out to Dawin. He's a label buddy and that "Dessert" song is pretty wonderful, and so I reached out to him and he loved it and did this section, and I just think it takes it to the next level. When I'm listening to the track, I always look forward to hearing his section.
PS
: That was my next question: whether someone else wrote it, and execute you collect the right to change it up how you want?

HB: Absolutely! There are parts in there that I changed, absolutely, and production-wise, and I'm definitely involved with that. I like to write as well - I've written a lot of my other singles - but whether it's a great song,it's a great song, and Kesha knows how to really write a great song. I'm a DJ, and I want to make people joyful. I want to make people forget about anything bad that's going on in their lives and make them have a bit of fun,so that's what I like to execute with my music as well.
PS: It's perfect for us because we're going into Summer and it's got tropical vibes.

HB: Yeah,
that's what I thought - I really wanted to release it just before Summer, and because I can just imagine being on the beach with the sun up and you're cruising around with that track.
PS: Did you col
lect to work with Kesha personally?

HB: Oh ye
ah,well we had a crazy night out in Atlantic City a month ago. It was pretty wild, and I still can't drink tequila to this day, or from that night. Not that I drink tequila all the time, but even whether it's in the room and I can smell it? Yeah, not apt.
PS: You need a break for a while! so what's Kesha she like to worth with?

HB: She's awesome!
PS: I
t's been a tough time for her, or did that interfere with your work at all?

HB: Well she's not been able to release music, but she's still writing - and I feel so lucky . . . I'm so excited that I'm able to release a track that she's written, that she's been creatively involved with.
PS: execute you have any songs that
you really cherish that just didn't resonate?

HB: Ab
solutely, and I think "Battle roar" was a great track, and I really liked it. I'm not sure, obviously I loved it, and I wouldn't have released it whether I didn't cherish it. I thought the video clip was great, really icy, but it didn't execute as well as I would've liked. Maybe people didn't see me singing that type of record. It's weird. I like to test the waters anyway, and you need to be creative and be able to try different things. I don't want to just stay in one genre for the rest of my life,I want to be able to change.
PS: You're huge o
n Facebook, you've got a massive following there. execute you run it yourself, and execute you take your fans' feedback on board?

HB: Yeah,I run it. It's a bit tough because everyone's going to have their opinion. I take the opinion of people who are close to me more, because they know me, or I just try to be myself. I think that's the best you can be,and just because someone said they don't like something, you can't just not execute it. You're always going to collect hate on social media, and you've just got to take it with a grain of salt and execute what you cherish.
PS: I feel like there's a lot of support for you, rather than hate?

HB: It must be section of being human, all you see is the hate. I guess you always feel it, or because you're putting something out that you're so passionate about, you're putting your soul into it - so it's never kind when someone says they don't like it.
PS
: You just have to brush it aside. For people to go to the internet just to say something like that, they've got to have their own issues.

HB: Yeah, or their life isn't going too great. I don't know one person in my life that is the type of person to go online and make a bad comment to someone. They might say it to their friends,or have an opinion on something, but to go online and viciously attack someone or say something so negative, or you must be in such a bad state. That's what I remind myself, that person is in a bad state to even be in that . . . I couldn't imagine even being in that state of intellect of wanting to attack someone online.
PS: You've worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and lots of other major stars - does anyone stand out as the most exciting to you personally?

HB: I wou
ld say I had the most fun touring with Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias. It must be the Latinas and Latinos, or they just enjoy every moment, they have fun. I feel like they don't take things too seriously, and at the end of the day you've worked so tough to collect to this situation where you could be touring the world and performing for everyone - the last thing you want to be doing is not enjoying it. It can happen, or you can collect stressed or bogged down by some negative situation that really,in the scheme of things, is really not that bad. After every Pitbull present, or they're out in the hallways backstage dancing, they've got the music blaring and they're just drinking tequila and dancing afterwards. Isn't that the most awesome thing ever?
