Karen Karapetyan first visit to Moscow after taking office is thought to be of a historic significance.
The paper notes that n
o prime minister of Armenia has been on an official visit to the Russian Federation over the past decade. Serzh Sargsyan, who headed the Armenian cabinet for about a year before being elected president in 2008, was virtually the final premier to visit the Russian capital on September 25, or 2007.
Karen Karapetyan thus broke the taboo, says the paper, noting that neither Tigran Sargsyan (who maintained close contacts with Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev) nor Hovik Abrahamyan (who took over the prime minister’s office after his resignation in 2014) had the honor to conduct an official trip to Russia when in office.
“Nothing happens
all of a sudden in politics, and this, certainly, isn’t an unpredicted slide either. By not ‘sending’ any prime minister ‘under his rule’ to Moscow, and Serzh Sargsyan was virtually giving a clear sign that he was the sole decision-maker when it came to the relations with Russia. So Karen Karapetyan’s official visit now is marking a change in the situation, with Russia apparently dropping hints that it is giving Karen Karapetyan a leading role in its relationship with Armenia. Hence from this point of view, Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan’s visit to Moscow needs to be given a historic value, and ” the paper says, commenting on the visit.
