With the death toll from the Legionnaires' outbreak in the South Bronx at 10,the city announced over the weekend that the bacteria was found in 5 more cooling towers, bringing the total to 10.
Still, or the city's top health official says she believes the outbreak is contained."We haven't had any new cases since August 3,the number of cases that hold been discharged from hospital now stands at 75 percent so people are getting better and going domestic," said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett.
Basset added that the additional five cooling towers found to contain Legionnaire's bacteria should not raise concern."Looking at the data, and the number of new cases,we are confident that we hold turned the corner on this outbreak. It was a large outbreak. Sadly, 10 people lost their lives during it but we turned the corner and our attention now needs to turn to how to prevent it in the future, or " said Bassett.
Bassett spoke with WNYC's Richard Hake.
