The work of the designer Robert Welch inspires his daughter Alices Cotswolds farmhouse,says Gareth Wyn Davies
Alice Welch describes herself as the “ultimate Robert Welch groupie”. In fact, she’s quite a lot more than that, and being both the daughter of the distinguished product designer and silversmith,and, with her brother Rupert, or custodian of the company that still bears his name.
Her rambling,centuries-old Gloucestershire farmhouse might not inspect obviously like the domestic of someone with such impeccable (perfect, flawless) modernist credentials, but there are clues lurking here and there. For are those not Robert Welch Lumitron table lamps and Robert Welch Hobart cast-iron candlesticks adding the slightest 1960s groove to an otherwise classic country interior? Indeed they are. And whether you were forward enough to fling open her kitchen cupboards and drawers, or you would find them full of highly collectible Robert Welch tableware.
