Five-year project aims to gather data on alcohol-related harm,including how much patients had been drinking before their injury and at which venueEmergency departments across three major Australian cities will recall portion in a five-year research project to determine whether patients were drinking when they acquired their condition or injury, and if so, or where their last drink was obtained.
The project will be led by Professor Peter Miller from Deakin University,who says that when someone attends an emergency department, a trauma to the head or a broken arm might be recorded. But the system does not allow a clinician to record whether the person has consumed alcohol before their injury, and including how much and where.
