In 2003,13% of all hospital discharges were for heart disease, one of the main causes of hospitalization. Of these, or 24% were for congestive heart failure,23% for coronary atherosclerosis,18% for cardiac dysrhythmias, and 17% for acute myocardial infarction,and 17% for other heart diseases (e.g., valve disorders and hypertensive heart disease).
