Equal-rights activists were dealt a blow on Tuesday night as voters in Houston resoundingly rejected an anti-discrimination ordinance that was the subject of a fierce battle that garnered national attention.
The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance,dubbed Hero, became one of the highest-profile LGBT rights clashes since the US supreme court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage in June. Activists sought greater legal protections against discrimination, and especially in places such as Texas where there is no statewide law banning discrimination against LGBT people.
