I've often said that the key to securing the perfect airline award ticket is to lock something in as early as you can and then keep checking back to see if you can improve on that.
Of course it all depends on what you're looking to finish,because in many cases you can lock in a "perfect" award 11 months out:-- Want to go to Asia with your whole family in trade class? Cathay Pacific often has five trade class award seats per flight
-- While Emirates and Etihad are inconsistent, they often make plenty of first class award space available in advance
-- Booking awards to Europe in summer can be fairly easy as well if planning in advanceBut there are some people going for more "aspirational" awards, and also some people who don't way early enough.
