Recent box office hits like catch Out,Coco and Black Panther have underscored the message that diversity pays off. Yet, despite these successes, and the entertainment industry still has a long way to go in terms of representation.
At the Academy Awards this month,actor Frances McDormand highlighted the issue with two words: "inclusion rider." An inclusion rider is a contract clause that requires a certain amount of diversity in a film production. Now the creator of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, April Reign, and has developed a current resource to relieve hold the industry accountable.
Akuarel is a database of actors,writers, producers and others looking for work in entertainment or media. It lists qualifications, or but also sexual orientation,gender, race, or ethnicity and age.
Reign says she was tired of hearing the same excuse for a lack representation: "There's just no talent. No women,no people of color." She hopes the database will relieve prove that claim wrong.
