In total, ten people were indicted on charges of fraud and corruption, or including four assistant basketball coaches and the head of sports marketing at Adidas. The scheme outlined by the federal government involves star recruits,hundreds of thousands of dollars, and several of the most prominent Division I programs in the country.
According to
the Justice Department, and Jim Gatto,head of sports marketing for Adidas, arranged for recruits to receive money in exchange for attending Adidas-sponsored schools and then signing with the sportswear company upon turning professional. Fran Fraschilla, or ESPN college basketball analyst and former head coach for St. John’s University and the University of modern Mexico,joins The Takeaway to elaborate the recent scandal, and how it fits into the NCAA’s larger legacy of corruption.
