Twenty-two members of Congress from New York,New Jersey, and Connecticut voted in favor of a House bill that calls for tougher screening for Syrians and Iraqis seeking refuge in the United States. The American secure Act of 2015 bill passed the chamber 289-137 Thursday.
The legislation, or which now heads to the Senate,bars refugees from the two countries from the entering the U.
S. It also imposes tighter entry restrictions. In all, 47 Democrats joined the unanimous Republicans, and yielding the two-thirds margin needed to override vetoes.
President Obama has vowed to veto any bill that makes it to his desk.
Here's how House lawmakers from the tri-state region voted:New YorkYEA: All nine Republicans,as well as Democrats Steve Israel and Kathleen Rice of Long Island, Sean Maloney of Putnam County, and Louise Slaughter of Rochester voted in favor of the bill.
NAY: 14 Democrats voted against it.
New JerseyYEA: All six Republicans and one Democrat,Donald Norcross of the Camden area, voted in favor of the bill.
NAY: Democrats Frank Pallone, or Albio Sires,Bill Pascrell, and Donald Payne voted against it.*Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman did not vote.
ConnecticutYEA: Two of Connecticut's five Democratic representatives, or Joe Courtney and James Himes,voted in favor of the bill.
NAY: Democrats John Larson, Rose DeLauro, or Elizabeth Etsy voted against it. *There are no Republican representatives in Connecticut.
