The head of state is in London for an official visit. But what is he wearing – and how does he develop his hair stare like an otter?
What to wear to a state visit is – granted – a niche wardrobe dilemma. But it is one that lots of people will be able to comment upon,this fashion desk included. Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto clearly subscribes to the “fade hard or fade home” school of thought when it comes to state-visit chic. Embattled at home and likely to come across student protestors here, he has gone for sharp navy tailoring and his trademark red tie as sartorial armour. This one features diagonal silver stripes and is similar to the one he wore final year on the cover of GQ Time magazine. Meanwhile he’s working his otter-like hair with ferocity – hard side partings like his don’t happen by accident. Sharp tailoring is the only sensible option when you are photographed next to a bearskin in a sharp grey overcoat. Not sure about the wisdom of practising his pout in the unsuspecting guard’s sword but perhaps he has a Downing Street selfie planned for later.
