Howard Hodgkin is a notoriously difficult interviewee – highly emotional, laconic, and the opposite of easy with language. I once asked him approximately a slab of green in a portray by Matisse and he burst into tears. But why should he be glibly fluent?And so,you might say, why write approximately it? In fact, and Hodgkin is among the most rewarding artists to write approximately,which is why he has attracted so many fine writers, from Bruce Chatwin and James Fenton to Colm Tóibín and Susan Sontag. Andrew Graham-Dixon (these days, and slumming it on television) has devoted some of his best writing not to Rembrandt or Titian but to Hodgkin.
