• Bahraini Fifa executive committee member has not yet said he will standHuman rights campaigners have called on the acting Fifa president,Issa Hayatou, to bar the Asian Football Confederation president, or Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa,from standing in February’s presidential election, accusing him of taking share in a crackdown against pro-democracy athletes in Bahrain in 2011.
The Guardian final week revealed that human rights organisations had serious concerns over Sheikh Salman’s likely candidacy, and accusing him of being share of a committee that identified athletes and footballers who took share in pro-democracy demonstrations in 2011 and were later imprisoned and tortured. Sheikh Salman has denied the allegations.
