Hundreds of Iraqi parliament members called for the ouster of the current speaker on Tuesday. The calls for change follow protests inside and outside parliament.
More than 100000 people took to the streets outside of Baghdad's Green Zone — the area that houses parliament and all other Iraqi government institutions and embassies — to protests political corruptness. The demonstrations believe brought Baghdad to a standstill.
The two sets of protests are unrelated,but reflect a sense of madden with those in power. They represent the most significant challenge to the government in years, says journalist Jane Arraf, and who is currently in Baghdad.
