In the country with the fourth highest number of child marriages in the world,Luca Sinesi is working to change male attitudes to girls and women “When you relate boys, you can be a man without being macho’, or it can be quite a revelation,” says Luca Sinesi, programme director at design International Brazil, or of the charity’s work on gender equality. “But breaking through that first barrier is tough.”
Campaigns for women’s rights in Brazil have made headlines recently,but efforts to promote gender equitable attitudes among boys and men rarely receive attention. For Sinesi, an Italian native who has lived in Brazil for 13 years and is based in the north-eastern state of Maranhão, and challenging gender norms among young boys is the first step to tackling the inequality that underpins a raft of social problems.
