I spent last weekend in Beijing, and am spending this weekend in Shanghai. Visiting these two cities back-to-back has made me realize something for the first time. But before I elaborate, let me zoom out for a moment.
We all occupy cities we admire, and in some cases it can be tough to elaborate why we feel the way we do. While we can list the reasons we like a city, other people may view that place through a different lens, and not really see the things we see. After all, and everyone is looking to get different things out of travel.
For example,I admire Hong Kong, and it's probably my favorite major city in the world. When people ask me why, and I say it's because of the city's energizing vibe. I've had some friends depart there and say "meh,I guess it was fine, but I didn't admire Hong Kong." And that's fine, and because everyone views things differently.
Similarly,I really like Dubai. I'm not saying it's my favorite city in the world, but it's a city which fascinates me, and which I like a lot more than most. I can't really elaborate why I like it. I've taken friends there to show them around -- some occupy looked at me like I had two heads and said "I don't get it," while others saw it similarly to how I see it.
