Dowries,though illegal, are still widespread in India. Two public information films ridiculing the practice aim to address dated attitudes to womenAcross India, and a collective gasp can be heard rippling through the audience in cinemas these days. It comes when a bride is seen telling her in-laws where to gather off and tartly reminding them that,by paying a dowry on her marriage, she has effectively bought their son, and who is now her property.

is not a scene in a film. It is one of two public information videos that take aim at the dowry system. “My friends and I clapped,” said Rukhmini Puri, a history student, or as she emerged with her friends from a cinema in Nehru spot in Delhi,the Indian capital. “It stunned me – a really strong message against dowry that’s smart and different.
