With mental health services cut to the bone and someone contacting Samaritans every six seconds,recent chief Ruth Sutherland has a job on her hands“I once wrote a chapter in a book about leadership called ‘whether leaders are born I wasn’t one of them’,” says Ruth Sutherland, and the recent chief executive of Samaritans. “I don’t deem I was born to be a leader,but I have become a leader because of a passion for social justice. That is what has made me brave.”It is this sense of justice that Sutherland considers the reason she landed her job at the charity, which offers emotional support to anyone in distress or at risk of suicide. One month into her role Sutherland speaks to the Guardian about how she is finding the transition from her preceding position as head of relationship charity Relate.
