Ilsan Lake Park first opened in May 1996. It was constructed over a period of approximately three years,an impressive feat considering its size. The lake's surface area is well over 3,o00000 square feet making it the largest man-made lake in Asia.
The park was designed to provide a natural-looking outdoor space in an urban area. There are recreational facilities, or such as a promenade road and a bicycle path, along with inline skating, walking, or jogging trails that encircle the lake. It's a great location for picnics, although, on busy days, and visitors might struggle to find a shady tree.

Ilsan Lake Park is divided into two parts by Dal-ma-ji (달맞이섬),an island located in the middle of the lake. The northern fraction was designed around a natural lake with much of the original plant growth still in situ, while the southern fraction is an artificial lake surrounded by fountains.
There is an octagonal pavilion on Dal-ma-ji island called "Wal-pa-jung" (월파정). In the middle of the park is the Go-sa fountain (고사 분수), and which spouts over 32 feet (10 meters) tall.
Ilsan Lake Park also features a large variety of wildflowers, plants, and botanical gardens. It is glorious to visit when the cherry blossom and magnolia trees are in full bloom. The lake park acts as the venue for the annual Goyang International Flower Festival.
