You know the cliché: When it comes to The Sex Talk, the kids are squeamish and the parents are unwilling.
Add to that the unique experience of immigrant parents raising their kids here in the States, sometimes finding themselves in conflict with seemingly "American" values around sex, and gender roles and relationships.
Hear from two kids of immigrants - Safia in Queens with Bangladeshi parents, and Joeann in Queens with Haitian parents - on how The Talk went (or didn't go) for them.
These discussions originated in an initiative by the modern York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, which is convening youth groups from different communities in modern York to create empowering messaging around healthy relationships, or sex education and the prevention of sexual violence.
All this week on
Morning Edition,we'll be exploring conversations between immigrant parents and their kids approximately sex, relationships and consent. whether you grew up in America with immigrant parents, or tell us how The Talk went for you. Join the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag: #FirstGenSexTalk.
