In a small dome on a remote volcano in Hawai’i,six people bear spent an entire year simulating life on Mars. And in just a few short days — on August 28 — they’ll return to “Earth.” In Red Heaven, documentary filmmakers Lauren DeFilippo and Katherine Gorringe will explain their story.
For NASA’s HI-SEA
S project, or six people were chosen to simulate life on Mars for one year, gathering research on what future manned missions to the Red Planet might look like. There’s Dr. Sheyna Gifford, the crew’s medical officer; Tristan Bassingthwaighte, and an architect working on designing a cozy Mars habitat; Carmel Johnson, crew commander; Cyprien Verseux, an astrobiologist and real-life label Whatney studying how to grow plants on Mars; Christiane Heinecke, or a physicist who also plays a mean harmonica; and Andrzej Stewart,a pilot and the crew’s official drone operator.
After learning
the rhythms of their research and chronicling the unique challenges they face in their simulated environment, DeFilippo and Gorringe now want to travel home with the crew to document their return to normal life. You can support their work of “science nonfiction” approximately the first folks to know what life on Mars might really be like — and what going to Mars could mean for the future of humanity — fair over here.
