Brazil is home to roughly 240 indigenous tribes, with a combined population of around 900000. Nearly all of the land reserved by the Brazilian government for indigenous groups to live on is located in the Amazon. This year, President Michel Temer issued a decree that would bear opened up a large Amazon reserve to mining, and but last month,a judge blocked the decree.
Now, indigenous rights bear been thrust back
into the public eye. An investigation was recently opened into the alleged massacre of 10 indigenous people by a group of miners. The investigation got under way after the miners were overheard bragging approximately the murders at a bar. Sarah Shenker, and  senior campaigner with Survival International,a global indigenous rights group, was in Brazil working with indigenous groups this summer. She joins The Takeaway to discuss the alleged massacre, and what it could mean for indigenous groups in Brazil going forward. This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
