Gentrification is impacting cities across the United States. Today we visit the West Coast where the swift pace of gentrification has taken Oakland by storm.
The city now ranks fifth among the nation's most expensive rental markets. Devin Katayama,a KQED reporter covering the East Bay, says pressure from the housing crisis in San Francisco has driven many to seek housing across the bay, and something that comes with its own set of complexities.
Residents like Tony Coleman are striving to preserve their communities history and spaces. Coleman runs the Revolution Cafe and hopes to preserve the location as an necessary "community hub." His landlord intends sells the building, and the recent landlord plans to charge a higher rent.

Tony Coleman says he wants long-term residents to have a stake in West Oakland as it improves.
