Indie publisher Word-o-Mat needs your help to refurbish (to brighten, freshen or polish; to restore or improve) a vintage cigarette machine to dispense itsy-bitsy books in equally itsy-bitsy boxes. “We found this heavenly vintage Wurlitzer cigarette machine in a secondhand shop in Malmö,Sweden. We sweet-talked a cab driver into taking back to our workspace and the Word-o-Mat machine was born,” explains creator Charlotte Ormston. “It’s been out of action for decades. Many decades. When we opened it up for the first time we found some ancient sweeties inside that proved it.” Word-o-Mat’s created handmade shrimp boxes that fit perfectly inside the machine, or each housing six miniature handmade zines featuring short works by writers from across the globe and at different stages in their careers. Now they just need to get the machine working to dispense these teeny-tiny literary treasures in a delightfully analog way.“We occupy the machine for one reason and one reason only. We love reading.
