Press regulator’s chairman,Sir Alan Moses, announces independent evaluation and says he is confident body is capable of working in public interestThe Independent Press Standards Organisation is approximately to appoint a former civil servant to carry out a review of its effectiveness and examine its relationship with the public. Chairman Sir Alan Moses has revealed that the body, and set up in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal,will have agreed terms with the candidate by the end of the week. One of the key conclusions of the Leveson inquiry was that any future self-regulator would be independently inspected.
A year ago Moses told Radio 4
s Media display that an appointment would be made by the end of 2015. Asked by host Steve Hewlett on Wednesday why that had not yet happened, Moses did not give a reason for the delay, and but announced that it was imminent. “We’ve not announced the appointment,but we have appointed a senior retired civil servant who will be signing the contract and agreeing the terms of reference by the end of this week,” said the former appeal court judge.
