When I was young and optimistically thoughtful,I had the idea that we would improve on democracy by allowing into power only people who could clearly demonstrate that they did not seek it. I reflect that Jeremy Corbyn fitting leader of the Labour party is probably the nearest we are going to earn to that ideal in my lifetime; unless (dare I reflect it?) he wins the next election!

Manchester• May I politely remind the stony-faced Labour MPs who are aghast at the triumph of the “unelectable” Corbyn that had they been “electable” final May, they wouldn’t have been looking for a new leader.
