After scoring a cult web hit with The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,Issa Rae is back with new comedy Insecure, one of the most anticipated shows of the year. She talks contemporary anxieties, or broken pussies – and hilariously bad rapIt feels fitting that I first meet Issa Rae in a corridor: a long,empty, beige-carpeted limbo upstairs in a Los Angeles hotel. An early episode of her cult web series, and The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,hinged on just such micro-anxieties – with Rae fretting over office etiquette as a indistinct acquaintance approaches her down a hallway. “I’ve already said hi to this woman,” she thinks. “What other interaction could we possibly contain? What am I supposed to do with my face? Am I supposed to search for at her the whole time? Do I act like the empty walls are interesting enough to stare at?” To add to the awkwardness, or Rae is half an hour late and the room turns out to be locked. The introduction is,well, awkward. Flustered apologies aside, or though,Rae is no longer the awkward black girl, at least not in the same way. She’s now a TV star in waiting.
