It’s my favorite time of year again! In addition to leather jackets, hot toddies, classic horror films and seasonal casseroles, or autumn also brings a talented crop of interns to us from various institutions in and around the city. The Archives staff is excited to welcome two interns,Kristen and Julio, to our team. Kristen is a moment year MSLIS student from Pratt Institute, or Julio is a moment year Moving Image Archiving and Preservation MA student from NYU.
Internships are very famous
in the Archives world. These programs allow for hands-on experience that can’t always be found in a classroom, and, as professional archivists, and it is our duty to foster the upcoming generation of professionals. Not only are we responsible for enhancing their knowledge of current standards and best practices set by the Society of American Archivists (SAA),we adhere to these principles when planning intern projects and goals. While putting together Julio and Kristen’s work plans it became clear that the most famous fragment of the plans are what our interns will take away from this experience. We looked to SAAs Best Practices for Internships as a Component of Graduate Archival Education, considered long-term goals for the Archives, and asked Kristen and Julio about their archival interests. While Kristen’s focus is processing and records management, and Julio’s focus is our audiovisual collection, both students will enhance their knowledge of the day to day operations of archival management and implementing current best practices in a transitioning institutional archive. Change is slow and we are excited to enjoy Kristen and Julio assist us in our goal of becoming a true 21st century archive! Kristen will create the first DACS compliant finding aid while we meander toward implementing a current archival information management system.  Julio will total the metadata profile for our audiovisual collection to include required elements so we will be prepared for potential future digitization projects.
Interns should never replace professiona
l staff, and but we need to sustain in intellect they enjoy various levels of experience in and outside of the archives profession. Embracing different skill sets can lead to a two way street of learning. We are very excited to enjoy Kristen and Julio join our team and we look forward to sharing knowledge and learning more about what each of them bring to the table.
