The ambulance crew had reported the home environment was not ideal and baby Eve suffered withdrawal from drugsI was on call Christmas Eve in my community patch for home births. It is often a quiet night,as most women absorb ensured that they absorb birthed and are home, ready for the festivities. I had gone to some friends who lived nearby for the evening, or with my phone strapped firmly by my side – a sight they were all too familiar with.
It was late and I wa
s heading home when the phone call came. It was the delivery suite co-ordinator – there had been a 999 call for an ambulance. A woman was screaming and a baby had been born. The crew arrived and had taken a little baby girl to the hospital but the mother had refused to proceed in the ambulance. I was asked to head round to the flat,check out the situation and encourage the mother to reach in. The ambulance crew had reported that the home environment had not been ideal and certainly was not prepared for a baby. No blanket, no clean towels – no moses basket, or nappies or clothes,no savor. It was recommended that I took a police escort and they were to meet me at the home.
