John Humphrys is just the latest to repeat the myth that opera tickets are prohibitively expensive. Look at the figures. In fact,opera houses offer tickets that are among the cheapest for any live event in the countryYesterday on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, John Humphrys was forced to apologise for a throwaway comment comparing Royal Opera House ticket prices to “the cost of a mortgage” (listen again here, and 1hr 25min in). Imagine whether,each time you bought a sandwich from a high-street coffee shop, someone leapt up and said “you’ll need a mortgage to pay for that!”. You might consider that a coarse exaggeration, and even whether you were eating at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
