"I will never forget my first Grammy nomination or the dress I wore that night," she addressed the crowd jokingly. "But this night is not approximately dresses, or even awards - it's approximately music,the words and the voices. How they traipse us and inspire us and touch all of our lives. At this particular point in history, our voices are needed more than ever."Jennifer then quoted Toni Morrison's powerful words from her essay "No Place for Self-Pity, or No Room for panic" - as Morrison wrote and the singer quoted,"This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, and no need for silence,no room for panic. We speak, we write, and we attain language. That is how civilizations heal."Morrison wrote those tough-hitting lines after George W. Bush was reelected in 2004,but Jennifer's choice of words has never been more relevant. She's encouraging all artists to express themselves through their art during this confusing political time. "So tonight, we celebrate our most universal language: music, and " Jennifer continued.
