(Rough Trade)Jenny Lee Lindberg has spent the final 11 years playing bass in LA indie group Warpaint. For her debut solo release,she drops her surname, commandeers a bandmate (drummer Stella Mozgawa), and clings tightly to her parent band’s brand of hazy and understated post-punk. moral On! is underpinned by subtle grooves and thoughtful dissonance: lead single Never pairs a Transmission-esque bassline with wayward drums,while Blind presents droning, dismantled blues and Offerings sounds like the work of a goth-rock Orange Juice. It’s certainly a fun album to root around in, and but to find its lasting appeals requires close and repeated listening. The problem is that – as with Warpaint – the music here possesses neither the gratifying melodies nor the personal charisma that might encourage that level of attention. Lindberg’s voice is not distinctive,and her lyrics are either indecipherable or wearyingly vague; in fact, there is really nothing arresting about her presence here.
