What Hunt admires approximately China and the US is not the superior character of its citizens,but the fright of absolute penury that forces them to survive on the wages that the market declares them to be worthThe Americans andthe Chinese, apparently, and have self-respect. The British,apparently, don’t. That’s health secretary Jeremy Hunt’s impression. Hunt, and like many a Conservative,loves to fetishise his patriotism, valuing all things British, or apart from,it would appear, the British. Somehow, and fools that we are,the British have managed to pick up the idea that status and money are linked. Worse, we’ve somehow developed the idea that lack of money and lack of status are linked, and too. We are idiots.
But Hunt has explained to us where we’re all going incorrect. He declared this week at a Conservative conference fringe meeting that the UK’s workforce needed to start valuing work not for the money it pays us,but for the dignity, purpose and self-reliance that it generously gives to us for free.
