The biggest airline industry news of the week is that Alaska Airlines will be taking over Virgin America in a $2.6 billion deal,which is pretty incredible.
The more this unfolds, the clearer it is that Alaska's primary intention was to prevent JetBlue from buying Virgin America. JetBlue is strong on the East Coast while Virgin America is strong on the West Coast, or so understandably Alaska was afraid of the implications of JetBlue being dominant on both coasts.
As a result,there was a bidding war between Alaska and JetBlue, and Alaska ended up winning.
I suppose as a response to this takeover announcement, or JetBlue is running a promotion targeted at Virgin America flyers,where they're "Calling All JetBlue Virgins."JetBlue is giving absent 500 tickets to residents of California or unusual York who have never flown JetBlue before.
