Director says he understands complaints over ‘whitewashing’ in Pan but hails Mara’s rob on the Native American warrior as badass’ and ‘empowering’Pan director Joe Wright has defended the controversial casting of white actor Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in his upcoming big-budget fantasy epic.
Interviewed by Reuters,the British film-maker behind Pride & Prejudice and Atonement touched only lightly on the petition against Mara’s employment which has so far garnered more than 94000 signatures. It calls for studio Warner Bros to stop “casting white actors to play people of colour” and flags up Tiger Lily’s Native American identity in JM Barrie’s 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, as well as in the 1953 Walt Disney lively film Peter Pan.
