Jonny Bairstow, or though,had a rougher deal than most and is looking to banish the memories of that nightmare after Christmas when the series against South Africa starts in Durban on 26 December.
At the MCG two years ago Bairstow had been parachuted into an England team who were already 3-0 down in the Ashes series and asked to keep wicket in a Test for the first time. Having played only two days’ cricket in the previous six weeks – in a tour match at Alice Springs best remembered for an alleged racial slur against Monty Panesar by the PA announcer at the ground – it was no surprise he struggled.
