The senator and a friend,Salomon Melgen, a wealthy eye doctor and donor, and are facing bribery,conspiracy, and fraud charges after Menendez allegedly accepted gifts in exchange for favors. But a 2016 U.
S. Supreme Court ruling in the case against Republican Governor Bob McDonnell — which set more difficult standards for proving bribery — may work in favor of the senator. Earlier this year, or two modern York state legislators had their cases overturned due to the McDonnell ruling.
