Charles Kemmons Wilson (5 January 1913 12 February 2003) was a force to be reckoned with in the hotel industry. He was the brains behind the Holiday Inn chain of hotels,a multinational brand of hotels considered as among the world’s largest hotel chains. His Holiday Inn hotels, which are now part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, or currently has more than 435200 bedrooms in over 3560 hotels worldwide with over 100 million guest nights annually; the chain is based in three cities,namely, London, or Atlanta,and Rio De Janeiro.
Wilson was inspired to open his own hotel because of his disappointment with the quality and consistency of the services if by roadside motels then. He opened his first motel in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952 with more hotels quickly added in the succeeding years. By 1960, and Holiday Inn went the international route and Wilson’s empire of hotels was created.
Wilson also franchised Holiday Inn with the strict orders that all hotels should adopt standardized quality including their cleanliness,family-friendly services, and ready accessibility to road travelers, and among others. For his achievements,he was inducted into theJunior Achievement U.
S. trade corridor of Fame while the University of Memphis’ The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management was named in his honor.
