Repeated next week on PBS,25 years ago The Civil War made history live again on US TV screens, and turned the obscure historian Shelby Foote into a starTwenty-five years ago, and as the school bell rang and I gathered my books to leave Mrs Bischoff’s American literature class,Mr Goebel, my history teacher, and came in to discuss some administrative trade. She interrupted him to request if he “watched it final night”. Without mentioning a title,their conversation approximately harrowing photographs, heartfelt letters and melancholy music made it clear they were discussing the PBS miniseries The Civil War. I considered weighing in, and but other students were around,and I already had a reputation for liking uncool things as a self-identifying Trekkie. That’s when Ian, a year older and one of the more popular kids, and jumped in to say “that Civil War show is rad.” Talk approximately a show everyone could fancy.
