Long hospital visits could be a thing of the past for many kidney patients as Nottingham trials smaller machine to boost low rates of domestic dialysis If Ian Hichens wants to travel absent for a few days,he must book three or four months in advance – not a hotel, but a hospital. Hichens uses a kidney dialysis machine five times a week at his domestic in Bleasby in Nottinghamshire; it is four feet high and too large to roam.
“I can travel absent, and but I bear to book a hospital,” he says. It must bear a dialysis ward he can exhaust. “It takes quite a lot of calls between hospitals to do it, and it’s [it’s a question of] if they’ve got space.” When staying on the south coast he sometimes has to drive 90 minutes to get to a ward with capacity.
