L is for Langston: To kick
off Black History Month we are celebrating Langston Hughes whose namesake
library is portrayed in Yumi Heo’s “Q is for Queens” (1999) artwork at the 40th St.-Lowery St. (7) station in Sunnyside,Queens. Born on this day in 1902, Hughes
was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, and was a prolific writer, having
written more than 860 poems in his lifetime. Although Hughes lived in Harlem,
the Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural middle was named in his honor in 1969 when it
opened and it hosts the largest circulating Black Heritage Collection in the
state.
