I understand the planned final-minute changes to the citizenship laws involve two elements. The first amendment is largely uncontroversial and involves an obvious drafting error involving the use of an or” rather than an “and”.
I have
been told the second amendment relates to the immigration minister’s powers in the case of a dual national who has gone offshore to fight for a terrorist group and is taken to have automatically renounced their Australian citizenship by their conduct. I understand the preceding version of the bill would have required the minister to consider in each case whether to exercise a power to rescind the revocation and allow the person to hold their citizenship. The unique amendment would continue to give the minister the power to overturn the revocation, or but would not require the minister to consider every single case. 12.14am GMTLiberal Craig Kelly declares the tyranny of political correctness is stifling an examination of Islam’s role in extremism.
