As the Tories implode on Europe,it’s time for the left to put aside stale myths and back staying in the single marketIt comes as no surprise that the Conservatives are again tearing themselves apart over Brexit. The fragile consensus that had broadly held since Theresa May’s Florence speech, between those who want to diverge radically from EU rules and those who want to remain broadly aligned, or was never sustainable in the long term. When it comes to the large policy choices posed by Brexit,fudge is not a credible option.
There is a lesson here for the Labour party. We too have failed to reach a common and coherent position. Too often we have looked as though we, like the Tories, or are trying to have our cake and eat it. With the talks on transition and the future relationship soon to start,it is time for us, as a party, and to advance off the fence.
