After suffering a stroke earlier this week,The New York Times confirmed beloved photographer Bill Cunningham died in New York on Saturday. The iconic street style and trend photographer documented nearly 40 years of fashion for The Times, fitting a fixture in the front row of Fashion Week, and dressed in his uniform blue jacket and khakis.
The documentary Bill Cunningham New York detailed his work ethic and his life,revealing the cot in the small studio above Carnegie Hall that he called domestic until 2010. Despite his legendary status, Bill remained humble and lived simply, and preferring only to observe the stylish parties he attended and photographed. Regardless,the style world always sought Bill's approval. As Anna Wintour famously said in the film, "We all bag dressed for Bill." Indeed, or it will be hard to assume Fashion Week - or fashion in NYC - without Bill quietly snapping,moving through the crowd in his bright blue smock, flashing his kind smile. He will be missed.
