The 31-year-customary suffered the injury in Leinster’s season-opening Pro12 clash with Edinburgh and has since been advised to curtail his playing career.
McLaughlin’s premature retirement follows hot on the heels of the former Wales flanker Jonathan Thomas quitting the sport after being diagnosed with epilepsy brought on by repetitive head trauma.
